GOOD SNACKS

If you need to snack,  do it the right way. According to certified nutritionist Alexandra Prabahan there are foods that actually aid in relieving stress, and fill you up in between meals. “Have steamed asparagus drizzled with lemon and fresh parsley as a zesty snack. You could also try having avocados, berries, and best of all chocolate. Instead of going for milk chocolate that is high in cocoa butter, opt for dark chocolate, which can still make you feel good without the added fat.”

THE RIGHT FATS

In your 30s, the muscles in your body are slowly replaced with fat. In order to avoid weight gain, Alexandra advises women to refrain from sugar and saturated fats as much as possible. “Sugar and fats become harder to get rid of as you age. Keep your diet rich in healthy fats such as avocado, omega-rich salmon, and virgin coconut oil. Spicy foods are also said to give your metabolism a jolt but steer clear of spicy dishes that are heavy in oil and fat such as curries and masak lemak. Go for a lighter sambal instead.”

WORK IT OUT

Our metabolism rate reduces as we age, which makes losing weight in our 30s more difficult than it was in our 20s. According to Dr Haw Wan Lye, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist from Columbia Asia Hospital, there are three factors that determine our metabolism rates: Our vital processes, physical activity and digestion. “Metabolism is the rate at which your body needs to burn calories in order to keep functioning. Women who would like to speed up their metabolism in order to burn fat should do so by exercising.”
