The first step into Pretty On Plate immediately draws you in as a quaint and picturesque way to while away the afternoon with an excellent cuppa and an exquisite selection of desserts. Made by resident chef, Aaron Quay – his business partner and childhood friend, Miakela Ong – tells me he has been nurturing his love for crafting sweet treats since the tender age of nine. This dynamic duo hopes to whet the appetites and introduce more refined desserts to the palates of those who reside in the friendly neighbourhood of Cheras. And if it’s your first time here, don’t fret, take a stab at their vivacious and vibrant Dessert Platter, where there’s a little something for everyone.
Earl Grey Passion Mousse
Starting off with this delight, you won’t be able to stop at this bite-sized heaven. Not one to be usually blown away by tea-infused desserts (I tend to find the subtle hints of tea lost in a barrage of sweetness), this one took me by surprise – in the best of ways possible! Floral and aromatic, the delicate essence of earl grey lingered in my mouth long after the last bite and the passion fruit jelly introduced just the right amount of tartness.
Homemade Granola with Coconut Ice Cream, Coconut Flakes and Mango Compote
The ice cream was light and refreshing – the perfect antithesis to the sweltering heat outside. The smattering of coconut flakes brought richness to its taste and the mango compote added a sourish sweet tinge to the dessert.
This is how all cheesecakes should be – soft, creamy, and melt-in-your-mouth with every forkful, while resting on a firm bed of homemade graham crackers to prevent it from becoming cloying.
Mini Strawberry Tart
A crispy almond tartlet shell houses light and fluffy crème diplomat, making for little punches of flavour with nuggets of strawberry flesh and a tartly hint of strawberry jam.
Double chocolate fudge cookies
Featuring a double whammy of rich, sweet, and moist dark chocolate, the cookies were soft, chewy bites – perfect for sharing over scintillating conversations.
Lime Tart with Meringue
There is no denying the first bite will sound the sour alarms on your taste buds. But once that passes, the sweetness comes through and it is a balance that flourishes quite beautifully on the palate – with a light touch of sweet and creamy meringue.
Vanilla Cheese Mouse with Salted Caramel and Macadamia Cookie Crumble
Mikaela’s pick of the bunch, it is not difficult to see why. Crushed macadamia biscuit crumbles translate into addictive crunch with a generous dollop of rich and moist vanilla cream. Throwing in just the slightest hint of salt, this dessert saw us licking our spoons clean.
Dark Chocolate Truffle Balls with Apricot Sauce
The last and richest of treats to grace our taste buds, the outer layer of dark chocolate wraps around an inner white one, encasing a dab of tartly apricot sauce. Not overtly powering, the mild acidity enhanced the richer flavours.
