The Two Of Us
Being a single mother is an adventure to relish says CHERYL AMBROSE, who refuses to have it any other way.
I’m tired of those sympathetic
looks strangers automatically offer when they
find out that I’m a single mother and have been
for all but a few months of my daughter’s life.
So stop it. The truth is I absolutely adore
the situation and wouldn’t trade it for the
world (although I might make an exception for
Johnny Depp).
I’ve always been a renegade of
sorts, refusing to conform to the whims of society
and not giving a damn what anyone thinks. Not
that I grew up with grandeur visions of making
it on my own. But over the years, I’ve come
to realise that when things happen, it’s best
to go with the flow rather than fight it.
The few short-lived relationships
since my divorce many moons ago is proof enough
that I do better on my own because I’m set in
my ways. Now some might look at that as a negative
thing but not me. I love being different. I
love being wacky. Almost a Phoebe, as C, my
eight-year- old, would say in reference to the
quirky Friends character.
And what better partner to be
quirky with than a child who is free of preconceived
notions of how grown-ups should act? They much
prefer it if we embrace the craziness, I’ve
learnt.
