TIMELESS BEAUTIES

TV presenter Jojo Struys, vocal powerhouse Salamiah Hassan and entrepreneur Sharifah Shawati reveal new plans and age issues (plus some quirky beauty tips!).

JOJO STRUYS, 35
From the moment Jojo Struys sits down, she has given the writer a sound education about the world of blogging and beyond. Somehow, there is a sense of youthful exuberance that belies her age.

WHAT BEAUTY MEANS

“When you get to know someone and find out the good in them, you’ll discover that they’ve endured the passages of time and find that they are beautiful people inside and that transfers on the outer appearance. Beauty really is skin deep,” she says.

DEMANDS OF THE JOB

“My profession demands that I be vain. I’m aware that one day, the looks are going to go and my body is going to head south. But I’m making the most of it while I still can,” she shares.

SALAMIAH HASSAN, 58

Her tiny feet do not touch the floor as she leans back in a chair while the makeup artist fuses over a stray eyelash. Looking at her, it’s quite unfathomable that Salamiah Hassan is 58 years old.

WORKING IT
“Work keeps me feeling young. The vibes from the audience and the joy of singing is just amazing. You can’t bottle that kind of formula and sell it – I’m just so blessed to have it in my life,” she says smiling.

THE NEXT STAGE
“What I look forward most about growing older is to experience life in its next stage. It’s an adventure and celebrating life in this way is the best anti-aging supplement available, and it’s free! Isn’t that wonderful? How you age is up to you. Do what you love and you’ll be timeless.”

SHARIFAH SHAWATI, 40
“I started a company called Adamaya in 2003 and turned my stress into something positive and I haven’t looked back since,” Shawati shares. “My best friend who is very spiritual told me, ‘Shawati, you must live in the moment.’ Madonna once said that it’s better to be a tiger for a day than a sheep for a 100 years – and I believe it.”

GOING UNDER THE KNIFE
Shawati boldly states that she sees no harm in plastic surgery stating, “I’m all for enhancement!” If you feel a little nip and tuck will help boost your confidence then I think you should do it,” she says refreshingly self-assured.

THE POWERS THAT BE

“No matter how advanced we get, it’s imperative that we go back to basics daily. What keeps me not just looking good, but feeling great is meditation and prayers. I wash my face and even bathe with what some might call ‘holy water’. "
