Nasi Lemak Takes on the Universe

Yesterday, Malaysians got a first look at the Nasi Lemak National Costume our Miss Universe Malaysia 2017, Samantha Katie James, will be wearing at the Miss Universe 2017 competition in Las Vegas at the end of this month.

Social media was abuzz after the reveal of this one-of-a-kind nasi lemak dress created by fashion designer Brian Khoo.

The dress, inspired by a simple pack of nasi lemak, features the beloved coconut milk-flavoured rice with sambal — garnished with a fried egg, cucumber slices, as well as fried ikan bilis (anchovies) and peanuts. But that’s not all: it also comes with banana leaves too!

On her Instagram, Samantha had this to share about the dress:

“NASI LEMAK!!! Malaysia’s very own iconic traditional food! AND My fav food ever!!! Designed and beaded fully by hand in one month! By @briankhoo@bybriankhoo And his team of 6!
